Annual General Meeting 2019

This will be held at Chawton House (GU34 1SJ) in Chawton, Hampshire, on Saturday 13 July, by kind permission of the Trustees of Chawton House Library.

There will be two sessions:

11.30 am

Members only for the business of the AGM.
Reports by the Chairman, the Hon. Secretary, and the Hon. Treasurer.
Questions from members.

12.30 pm

Lunch. Members are invited to bring a picnic. Caterers will provide a lunch if desired, and pre-ordered via the ticket application form. (See below).

  2.30 pm

The Address 'We Must Allow for Difference of Taste': Jane Austen, 19th-century publishing and 19th-century readers.
To be given by Dr Gillian Dow, Associate Professor in English, University of Southampton.

  3.30 pm


  4.45 pm

Evensong at St Nicholas Church.

Members may bring one guest to the afternoon meeting, for which a charge of 5.00 is made.

Once again this year, James Freeman has very kindly offered, free of charge, to provide a bus service between Alton Station and Chawton through the 'Friends of King Alfred Buses', of which he is Honorary President. (The service from Winchester is not available this year.) The timetable for the bus service is as follows:

      Train departs Waterloo

            9.23 am

      Train arrives Alton

          10.38 am

      Bus picks up at Alton and goes to Chawton House

   From 10.38 am

      Train departs Waterloo

          12.23 pm

      Train arrives Alton

            1.37 pm

      Bus picks up at Alton and goes to Chawton House

    From 1.37 pm

      Bus departs Chawton House for earlier train

            4.15 pm

      Train (early) leaves Alton

            4.44 pm

      Bus departs Chawton House for Alton station

            5.20 pm

      Train departs Alton

            5.44 pm

      Train arrives Waterloo

            6.51 pm

It would be advisable, nearer to the date, to check these train times, as they may change between now and the AGM. We are grateful to James for arranging this service.

Members and friends are asked not to bring dogs into the marquee. Cars may not be parked on the lawn beside the House. Car parking is available in the adjoining meadow.

Please apply for tickets no later than Saturday 15 June, and be sure to enclose a stamped addressed envelope. Cheques should be made payable to the 'Jane Austen Society'. Lunch will be available from the caterer, if paid for in advance (12.50). Please indicate on the ticket application form how many lunches you require. (Specify chicken or vegetarian salad.) Please make sure you bring the ticket with you to the AGM.
