AGM and Lecture

Speaker: Hazel Mills, 'Know Your Curricle from your Phaeton'.

Venue: Jane Austen's House Museum, Chawton, Hampshire.

Wednesday 8 June at 2pm

Visit to Steventon, followed by afternoon tea.

The initial meeting point is the Church, in which Jeffrey Mann will give an introductory talk about the Church and the village, with specific reference to Jane Austen and her family. (Further items of interest are the recently restored medieval paintings in the Church, one of them depicting a medieval bishop.)

After the talk, our party will be free to explore, and then tea will be served in the Church grounds. Steventon is a very pretty village, little changed from the times of Jane Austen.

Cost: £6

Wednesday 29 June at 2pm

Visit to Ibthorpe House, followed by full afternoon tea.

Ibthorpe House was the home of the Lloyd family who enjoyed close relationships with the Austens. When Jane's family moved to Bath, lengthy stays at Ibthorpe enabled her to postpone her move to Bath, similar to the experience of Anne Elliot in Persuasion.

The afternoon will include a tour of both the House and splendid garden, followed by a full afternoon tea. (Ibthorpe House is not open to the public, but by appointment only.)

Cost: £6, plus £8 for afternoon tea.

Wednesday 20 July at 7pm

Talk by Ruth Facer, 'Mary Bacon's World'

The speaker (an independent researcher) discovered a ledger belonging to Mary Bacon, a farmer's wife who lived in Hampshire (near Steventon) in the 18th/early 19th century. The ledger contains information on a wide range of subjects, including religious musings, medical cures, weather reports and almanac material, providing an insight into Jane Austen's world and times.

Wine, soft drinks and light refreshments will be available before the talk.

Venue: Jane Austen's House Museum, Chawton, Hampshire.

Cost: £6
