London Group : Events

The London Group of the Jane Austen Society now meets at 2.30 pm on four Saturdays in the year in St Columba’s Church Hall, Pont Street, SW3. These meetings, of which at least one is free to members of the Group (all others are charged at cost), feature either a speaker or a speaker-led discussion, sometimes with videos to illustrate screen adaptations of the novels. Tea and biscuits are included. In addition, there is a full-day annual Group outing held on a Saturday in summer and a Birthday Lunch on a Saturday at the start of December.

The Group has a stall at the main Jane Austen Society's AGM held each July at Chawton, and looks after the grave of Eliza de Feuillide (Jane Austen's cousin and wife of Henry, her brother - and supposedly model for Mary Crawford in Mansfield Park). This is in the churchyard of St John's, Hampstead (turn immediately left inside the gates on a little path along the wall, to a large horse-chestnut tree. The slab is on the right).

Membership is around 140 and is not strictly confined to residents of London districts. New members are always welcome. The annual subscription is £8, which lasts for one year from 1 April, but two and three-year subscriptions of £16 and £24 are also available. In addition to the events above, this includes two free Newsletters a year (in Spring and Autumn).

If you wish to join the London Group, please complete and return the application form via the 'How to Join' link in the left-hand column.

Membership of the Group does not confer membership of the main/national Jane Austen Society, but it does give entitlement to a reduced subscription to it of £12 a year.

Non-members of the Group, including those from the national Jane Austen Society, are warmly welcome to attend any of the events, after giving priority to members and their guests, but the entrance fee will be £1 extra. Please contact Jill Manasseh by phone or e-mail if you wish to attend an event (details below).

In general, please address enquiries about the London Group to:
Jill Manasseh on 020 7373 2220 or via e-mail at philjil@lineone.net (Please insert 'Jane Austen' as the subject of the e-mail.)

Please address any enquiries about the main/national Society to the Membership Secretary:
