South West Branch : Diary of Events 2019

The events listed below are those specifically arranged by the South West Branch of the Society. For details of other events related to Jane Austen (theatre productions, musical events, lectures, literary festivals etc), some of which may also be located in this area of the country, please refer to the Events UK page.


All events to be held from 10.30am to 3.30pm at Southernhay Hall, Exeter.


Saturday 12 January

Day conference with morning coffee, buffet lunch and two lectures:

Morning: Penelope Byrde, 'A Round of the Utmost Diversion: Dress and Social Life in Jane Austen's Bath'
Afternoon: Mark Burgess, 'Mrs Goddard's Profession - Jane Austen, schoolteachers, and the Reading Ladies Boarding School'


Saturday 6 April

Day conference with morning coffee, buffet lunch and two lectures:

Morning: Michael Biddiss, 'Seaside Follies: An Excursion to Sanditon'
Afternoon: Clio O'Sullivan, 'Jane Austen and Scandal'


Saturday 15 June

Day conference with morning coffee, buffet lunch and two lectures:

Morning: Sheila Kindred, 'Fanny Palmer, Jane Austen's Transatlantic Sister'
Afternoon: Richard Jenkyns, 'Jane Austen and Music'


Saturday 16 November

Day conference with morning coffee, buffet lunch and two lectures:

Morning: Tom Kelly, 'Heroic Capacity for Love'
Afternoon: Maureen Kelly, 'Jane Austen and Curates: the good, the bad and the so-so'
