Although we have no proof that Jane Austen visited here, she did
write about 'the Island' in her letters and mentioned it on three
occasions in Mansfield Park. She described the scenery so well
that it is likely that she did visit the Island. Her brother Frank's
wife Mary visited in June 1808 with her sister Martha. Jane's friend,
Anne Lefroy, had a son studying law at Newport Isle of Wight. Members
of the Knight family still reside here.
