Travel Bursaries

Miss Alison Hodgson, an enthusiastic member and supporter of the Jane Austen Society, generously left a bequest to the Society. The Society’s Committee have decided, in line with the educational aims of the Society, to establish a Travel Bursary Fund.

The Fund is expected to generate between four and six thousand pounds annually. Out of the Fund, as required, sums will be made available to individual applicants who may incur travel and other subsistence expenses in furthering their studies within the framework described below, and within the British Isles. Funds approved will normally be released retrospectively to successful applicants.

It is anticipated that the applications for support from the Fund will largely be from graduate and undergraduate students, but applications from school parties and individuals not in full-time education will also be considered. Applications should consist of:

(a)  a completed application form (see below)
(b)  a detailed description of the proposed topic of study (maximum 1000 words)
(c)  a brief CV (not exceeding two pages)
(d)  as accurate an estimate as possible of the costs involved
(e)  under separate cover, a supporting letter from one referee (in the case of a student applicant
this will normally be their research supervisor or head of department).

Beneficiaries of the Fund will be asked to write a report on their studies. The Society will reserve the right to publish such reports in its Newsletter, Annual Report or on its website as appropriate.

It is intended that the framework within which applications will be considered should be as broad as possible, but in some way associated with:

-  Jane Austen's works; or with her family, her life and times
-  studies of archives or research collections relating to the above, but also to the contemporary
environment from a cultural, art, fashion, literature, politics, economics, agricultural, science
   and medicine perspective
-  travel may focus on 'Jane Austen sites', such as Chawton, Godmersham, Bath, Southampton,
Lyme Regis, etc, but also on locations where the material to be studied is to be found.

Creative relevant proposals beyond the above framework will also receive due consideration.

To apply for bursary support, please print and complete the application form via the link in the left-hand column, and send (together with brief CV and detailed description of your proposed topic) to:
